National Council on Independent Living
Website
Overview
The National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) is the longest-running national cross-disability, grassroots organization led by and for people with disabilities. NCIL promotes disability rights, independent living, and full community inclusion through advocacy, education, and support. Families and self-advocates can use NCIL’s resources to connect with local Centers for Independent Living (CILs), access peer support, and learn about civil rights protections and transition services
Description
NCIL’s website offers tools and information on independent living skills, systems advocacy, and transitioning from school to adult life. Families can explore resources on housing, employment, healthcare, and legal rights, as well as find training opportunities and national events. The Independent Living philosophy emphasizes consumer control—empowering individuals with disabilities to make decisions about their lives and futures. NCIL helps families become informed advocates and supports youth in building self-determination and community connections
