Website

Overview

The Friendships & Dating Program, developed by the UAA Center for Human Development, is a relationship education program for teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as youth with serious emotional disturbance. This 10-week program teaches participants how to build and maintain healthy relationships, communicate effectively, and prevent interpersonal violence. It supports self-advocates in developing social skills that are essential for independence and community inclusion.

Description

Through interactive sessions and real-world practice, participants learn about emotions, boundaries, communication, dating, personal safety, and conflict resolution. The program is delivered by trained facilitators in community settings and emphasizes experiential learning. By focusing on both friendships and romantic relationships, the program helps self-advocates gain confidence, navigate social situations, and build meaningful connections as they transition into adult life.
